Second grader says he was locked in a hot closet at school | fox4kc.com.

What’s going on at your child’s school?  Ask to see the closets or booths they use for discipline.  If they use such an area which is locked, then this is problematic.  This is not a necessary approach of behavior development.  Also ask to see the seclusion policy and review it to see if it is consistent with state standards.

Missouri special ed student loses paraprofessional; IEP ?

rsz_billiard_ball_10_tenSchool districts are informing parents of students with IEPs how paraprofessional, classroom aide, and program(s) are to be dropped over the summer. Parents may be told this and not question the “administrative decision” the district is announcing.  Don’t be bamboozled!

Changes to how a student is receiving services from a school district may alter the extent of learning the child receives.  It may lessen or aggravate the ability of the student to benefit from schooling.  Did you child’s needs change enough to the extent he no longer needs this support?  Parents can ask for an evaluation to see.

Some districts have told parents that many paraprofessionals will not be offered.  Some district have told parents that their student will now have a para available while the para serves a classroom full of student simultaneously.  the-iep-centerAsk who is assisting your child while the para is at lunch, on a restroom break or out for the day.

There are avenues to pursue to address this; it may be most effective if a parent pursues correction before the change takes place in August.

Prepare for IEP meeting in Missouri

Parents need not go into the “annual” IEP meeting unprepared.  Parents are allowed to view a students records prior to any upcoming IEP meeting. Now that it is almost spring, time is running short to accomplish this before the end of the school year.  Using e-mail or a written note, request to review your child’s records. Seeing the paperwork the district has about your child can be quite revealing.  Things may be happening to your child that you are not aware.

When you arrive to review your child’s records, be sure to ask to see all records so that you get a complete picture. rsz_blank-and-waiting-200x300 There may be nurse, counselor, discipline (Principal & staff) notes, academic (achievement), behavior data collection, therapist notes, etc.   Often these records are not presented to a parent unless the parent knows specifically to ask for them.

Knowing how your child performed during the year by reviewing  the information collected on your child will help a parent to know what to request in the IEP meeting.

Don’t be bamboozled!   Parents who are serious about their child’s schooling and tired of being bamboozled use advocates at The IEP Center.  Parents who are serious about their child’s education use The IEP Center in North Kansas City School District, Excelsior Springs School District, Clinton School District and Bolivar School District. the-iep-center
