Help my child at school in Missouri

Parents call me describing how they have tried to get the public school100_0673 to help their child for YEARS!  Usually they talk to staff at the school who brushes off the parent with comments like “he’ll grow out of it“, “wait and see”, or “we’ll test the kids in the spring”.  Then years pass and the student is so far behind and frustrated resulting in emotional and social issues becoming a problem.

Parents who suspect a child is struggling at public school need to communicate it in writing or e-mail to the special ed director. As a result, many schools will then include the child in use of interventions.  If after a few weeks of intervention no progress is indicated, a parent should insist and request a comprehensive evaluation in all areas of suspected disability.  Parents aren’t obligated to pay for testing by outside professionals; the public school district usually is required to perform testing.   A reasonable person would believe that a school district would know to do these things without the parents insistence!  Contact us for help with any struggles doing this; 816 865 6262  or  http://bit.ly/iepconsult

Cameras needed in MO Special Education Classrooms? 2016

Missouri’s House Bill 2419 would require cameras into public school classrooms where special education students attend.

Let’s look at pros and cons.

Pros:

  1. Non-verbal students parent’s could better understand how a student acquired an injury
  2. Teachers and staff in the room wouldn’t be accused of hurting a student when the student’s injury was self-inflicted or caused by another student.
  3. Staff concerns voiced to administration over students who need more supports will be legitimized.
  4. Attacks by students onto other students will be recorded.
  5. Promotes the access to a safer environment for those who are the most vulnerable.
  6. Decreases potential liability of school district.
  7. Students and staff  would be less likely to be maltreated and bullied.

Cons:

  1. Costs to purchase and install.  I would hope local community groups and PTAs would consider contributing these to our local schools.  Perhaps DESE would implement a grant program. Perhaps donations by technology organizations.
  2. Maintenance.  Many districts currently maintain cameras operating on campus.
