100_0691Student with behaviors that the public school doesn’t appropriately address is sent home. The parent has no idea that the school has a duty to provide programming for this student to the same extent that typical student benefit from schooling (such as a full day). In some instances the public school completes paperwork called “homebound“.

Help my child at school in Missouri

Parents call me describing how they have tried to get the public school100_0673 to help their child for YEARS!  Usually they talk to staff at the school who brushes off the parent with comments like “he’ll grow out of it“, “wait and see”, or “we’ll test the kids in the spring”.  Then years pass and the student is so far behind and frustrated resulting in emotional and social issues becoming a problem.

Parents who suspect a child is struggling at public school need to communicate it in writing or e-mail to the special ed director. As a result, many schools will then include the child in use of interventions.  If after a few weeks of intervention no progress is indicated, a parent should insist and request a comprehensive evaluation in all areas of suspected disability.  Parents aren’t obligated to pay for testing by outside professionals; the public school district usually is required to perform testing.   A reasonable person would believe that a school district would know to do these things without the parents insistence!  Contact us for help with any struggles doing this; 816 865 6262  or  http://bit.ly/iepconsult

ADHD student IEP goals not helpful Missouri

Student with IEP goals of “turning in work on time” and reduced need for “redirection” has had same goals for years.  The goals have no indication of the baseline for the student, nor what specifics will make his success happen.rsz_parapro2-199x300

The IEP lists some accommodations but lacks the modifications necessary to help this student progress.  Student hates school and often “tunes out”.  Many school districts do not offer extra adult help in classrooms; many paraprofessionals were eliminated a couple of years ago.  Parents can request that paraprofessionals be available and specifically assigned to the student for a certain number of minutes per week.

Care team watching my child struggle in public school in Missouri

rsz_writingstudent-vert-201x300tchronchalkboardPublic schools sometimes aren’t eager to serve our kids with special needs.  Sometimes parents are misled to think they have to follow the school’s decision when the school’s actions are not consistent with state regulations. For example, a student who struggled academically was  being monitored by school personnel called a “care team”. Some parents have been told the district doesn’t have a program for your child, then continuing to be monitored by this “care team” for over two years.
